Settling In…

It has been over three months since I moved to Lucan to live, work and study. It has been tough and lonely at times being far from friends and family. However, it has also been incredibly rewarding to be a part of the ministry that is going on down here. I am incredibly blessed to be in the position I am in. Studying in IBI and working in Lucan Presbyterian Church (LPC) is an amazing mix!

In IBI I have been studying some amazing subjects, Pastoral Care, Interpretation of the Bible, Communication, Old Testament, Ministry and Personal Development, and Study Skills. All of these subjects are amazing (Maybe study skills less so) and so relevant to my work in LPC. I’ve been just about managing to keep up-to-date with my studies and I can see them making a difference in how I work in LPC. Any talks I have given have been improved by the work I’ve done in communication classes, I think a lot more about how I can pastorally care for people than I used to, thanks to my Pastoral Care classes.

It has been tough to balance my work life, college life, and personal life. I tend to allow more time for one or the other at the expense of the other two. I so far haven’t let the ball drop too much yet, but it’s something I need to figure out for myself. Fortunately I have a mentor, the great Josh McCance, it has been great getting to know him. Josh has been chatting to me about my work in LPC as well as my studies in IBI.

In Lucan I have been leading a youth group that meets on Friday nights, MAD (That is its name). As well as that I have been helping Richard lead a youth group on Sunday nights, as well as a few other bits and bobs around the church. It has been busy and at many times I feel like I have no idea what i’m doing.

I has been very tough to get into the swing of things, but I am getting there and the people in LPC have been so kind and helpful. Karen (One of the leaders at MAD) has been helping me to get to know the youth. She has helped me run games, control the nights that go a bit haywire. All in all invaluable. Isabelle, one of the students in LPC has been very kind to me. Helping me to get to know other students in the area and to make friends. There are so many more people in LPC that have been an amazing help to my new life down here, if I were to list them this post would go on for days.

Richard has been amazing too, mentoring me as well as helping me top get used to the work load. I honestly love the work I have been given to do in LPC. I cant thank God enough for calling me here.

But despite loving everything I am doing I still need A LOT of prayer!
I need prayer for feelings on inadequacy, loneliness, tiredness.

I need prayer for time management, that I can give enough time to all of the things that I am doing and that they all get done well.

I need prayer for the future of my work in LPC, that I can work with God and in places that he is already moving so I can make the most of my time here.

Thank you guys for reading and for your continued prayer that I O’ so need!!

God bless,

Ryan Urquhart
